PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Matty McConnell

Chartiers Valley, 6-1, Guard, Senior

The scoop: Five years ago T.J. McConnell was the Player of the Year. His younger brother gets the honor this year. Matty had a big senior season in leading Chartiers Valley to the WPIAL Class AAAA title. He did a little bit of everything for the Colts. He led the WPIAL in scoring at 29.5 points a game and also averaged 9.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 4.9 steals. He shot 57 percent from the field, 78 percent from the free-throw line and had 64 3-pointers. He was a four-year varsity player and finished his career with 2,018 points.

College talk: McConnell signed with Robert Morris in November.

Most memorable moment this season: Probably hitting the half-court [shot at the end of the third quarter] in the [WPIAL title] game at the Petersen Center

Favorite basketball player of all time: Michael Jordan

Favorite cereal: Fruity Pebbles

Favorite school subject: Math

Best sports movie: Miracle On Ice

Something that bothers you about sports: The amount of calls that don't get called in the NBA, like traveling.

In 10 years, you see yourself: Still playing basketball somewhere.

You wish you had more time for: Sleep

Kason Harrell

Hempfield, 6-3, Guard, Senior

The scoop: Harrell is a two-time Fabulous Five selection. He was a four-year starter and the Spartans won or tied for the WPIAL Class AAAA Section 1 championship in all four years. Hempfield lost only 17 games in his four years and only two home games. Harrell finished his career as the leading scorer in Hempfield history with 1,905 points. This season, he was the third-leading scorer in the WPIAL and averaged 25.2 points a game. He also averaged 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals.

College talk: Harrell signed in November with Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne (IPFW), an NCAA Division I school.

Most memorable moment this season: Probably breaking the school scoring record.

Favorite basketball player of all time: Kobe Bryant.

Favorite cereal: Lucky Charms.

Favorite school subject: History.

Best sports movie: Glory Road.

Something that bothers you about sports: Players that talk trash all the time. In AAU, I ran into it a lot. Not as much in the WPIAL.

In 10 years, you see yourself: As an NBA player.

You wish you had more time for: Hanging out with friends.

Daylon Carter

Ambridge, 6-4, Forward, Senior

The scoop: The Bridgers made it to the WPIAL semifinals for only the third time in the past 45 seasons, and Carter was one of the main reasons. Carter was the fifth-leading scorer in the WPIAL and averaged 24.8 points a game. He scored 42 in a WPIAL playoff game, the fifth-highest ever in a Class AAA postseason game. He also averaged nine rebounds a game. He played inside, but also had the ability to hit 3-pointers. He finished his career with 1,403 points.

College talk: Has not made a decision. Clarion, IUP and Seton Hill are interested.

Most memorable moment this season: Probably between beating Mars in the [WPIAL] quarterfinals or scoring my 1,000th point.

Favorite basketball player of all time: Russell Westbrook.

Favorite cereal: Reese's Puffs, for sure.

Favorite school subject: Anatomy.

Best sports movie: Coach Carter.

Something that bothers you about sports: I hate when people pout and also when my brother [Elijah] yells too much from the stands.

In 10 years, you see yourself: Being one of the top doctors on the East Coast and engaged to Kylie Jenner [half sister of one of the Kardashian girls].

You wish you had more time for: Another year in high school.

Cole Constantino

North Allegheny, 6-2, Guard, Senior

The scoop: North Allegheny played it Cole often times this season. Constantino had a big senior season and helped the Tigers advance to the WPIAL Class AAAA title game for the first time in 16 years. Constantino was an effective slasher to the basket, as well as an excellent shooter. He averaged 23.4 points a game and shot 52 percent from the field. He led the team in 3-pointers with 67 and shot 45 percent behind the arc. He shot 87 percent from the free-throw line and also averaged 5.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.3 steals for a 24-4 team.

College: Constantino is undecided.

Most memorable moment this season: Definitely just playing in Petersen Events Center [in the WPIAL title game]. It was just the coolest atmosphere.

Favorite basketball player of all time: Larry Bird. I've liked him since I was a kid.

Favorite cereal: Lucky Charms, by far.

Favorite school subject: Physics.

Best sports movie: Warrior. It was filmed at North Hills High School.

Something that bothers you about sports: Talking smack and not backing it up.

In 10 years, you see yourself: I'd say an engineer at a high-end company.

You wish you had more time for: Reading.

Stephon McGinnis

Aliquippa, 5-8, Guard, Senior

The scoop: McGinnis is small, but he was gigantic for a team that was one win away from a perfect season. Aliquippa finished 29-1, losing only in the PIAA Class AA final. McGinnis played his first three seasons at Ambridge and averaged 20 a game last year before transferring to Aliquippa, where he averaged 18.5 and had 70 3-pointers for a team that averaged 74 a game. A left-hander, McGinnis hurt defenses with drives, outside shooting and defense. He also averaged 5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 5.9 steals.

College talk: Visited Gannon. A few other Divison II schools interested.

Most memorable moment this season: Winning the WPIAL.

Favorite basketball player of all time: Stephen Curry.

Favorite cereal: Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Favorite school subject: Math.

How often do you get asked why you transferred to Aliquippa? Probably once or twice a week.

Favorite sports movie: Like Mike.

Something that bothers you about sports: Officials. They just don't call the game right sometimes.

In 10 years, you see yourself: Whatever I major in college.

You wish you had more time for: Playing more high school basketball.
