Post-Gazette's 2016 Boys Soccer All-Area Team

Player of the Year

Matt Happ, Seneca Valley — Happ, a senior forward, led Seneca Valley to a WPIAL Class 4A Section 1 title with an unbeaten record and to a spot in the WPIAL final. For his 17 goals, seven assists and clutch performances in leading the Raiders, Happ is the Post-Gazette Boys Soccer Player of the Year. A wiry 6-footer with superb speed and strong academics, Happ has been named all-state and is receiving plenty of college attention. He scored in 15 of Seneca Valley's 22 games, including the winner in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs and a double-overtime goal in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.

The Rest

Wail Bichiba, Allderdice — Morocco native moved from midfielder, where he started as a junior, to defense for his senior campaign and had seven goals and seven assists. With plenty of size at 6-3, Bichiba was named all-state and is considering Robert Morris for college.

Darryl Daniels, Seton-LaSalle — The early front-runner for player of the year next season, Daniels is a first-team all-state junior forward who notched 41 goals and seven assists after transferring from Brashear.

Dan Irwin, South Park — A three-year starter, this senior midfielder was named all-state for the first time after scoring seven goals with five assists. He had 23 and 26, respectively, in his career.

Cole Lutz, Thomas Jefferson — Senior forward did a little of everything for the Jaguars, putting in 18 goals and dishing out 15 assists as a third-year starter. For his career, Lutz had 37 goals and 25 assists.

Ryan Mertz, Upper St. Clair — Senior midfielder was a third-year starter who led the Panthers in scoring with eight goals and six assists in an all-state campaign. His older brother Robbie was also an all-state player at Upper St. Clair.

Jonah Moore, Canon-McMillan — A three-year starter, Moore moved from defense to midfielder for his junior season and posted 10 goals and five assists en route to all-state honors and Division I interest.

Mike Napoleone, Sewickley Academy — For the Panthers, Napoleone was a driving force behind their WPIAL Class 1A championship. His 15 goals and nine assists as a senior midfielder garnered him player of the year honors in his section.

Mitch Roell, South Park — Roell, a senior forward, led the Eagles with 22 goals and finishes his career with 47. He netted two hat tricks this season and was named all-state for the first time.

Michael Snowball, Fox Chapel — One of the best names in the WPIAL was also one of the best players, as Snowball poured in 18 goals and 15 assists to lead the Foxes in both categories. A 6-footer who also plays basketball, Snowball could go that route for college.

Chris Stack, Seton-LaSalle — Stack, a senior forward, finishes his career with 45 goals after getting 23 this year to go with 15 assists. He plays defense for his club team, but formed a strong one-two scoring punch with Daniels for the Rebels.

Sean Tinney, Chartiers Valley — A four-year starter, Tinney recorded 23 goals and 12 assists from his forward position with the Colts. He was named all-state for the second time after leading Chartiers Valley to the WPIAL Class 3A title.
