A visit with WPIAL golf champion Jimmy Meyers

Background Info: Central Catholic senior Jimmy Meyers has been a force on the course for the Vikings ever since he joined the team as a freshman in 2015. He has qualified for the PIAA Class 3A finals at Heritage Hills in York all four years with his best finish to date coming in 2017 when he came in fourth. He will be competing in the two-day competition for the final time beginning on Monday. IN addition to his work at the state level, he has excelled in the WPIAL. He was tied for second in the 2016 finals as a sophomore on his home course at Oakmont, then with the historical venue once again playing host this season, he capped off his round with a birdie on No. 18 to finish with a 2-under 33 on the back nine and a par-71 in the event that secured a four-shot victory over teammate Neal Shipley to win the individual title. If that weren’t enough, he has helped Central Catholic to win the last three WPIAL Class 3A team titles – including this year – and a PIAA crown in 2016.

Jimmy Meyers on his WPIAL playing experience.
"It’s just been amazing with the camaraderie I’ve had with my team and the other teams in the section and making friends and seeing them and playing in individual matches is awesome. I’ve made some really good friendships I’ve just had a lot of fun being able to play against other kids from around the state and from around here."

Jimmy Meyers on winning at Oakmont.
"It was just amazing and just everything that I wished for. I came into it, into my high school career, not thinking about winning WPIALs when I was a freshman coming into it. And then having a chance my sophomore year, I was just happy to have a chance and coming in second really hurt me and I was kind of wishing for another shot to have the opportunity and to have another shot at winning even if it wasn’t at Oakmont. But to learn that it was there my senior year and to able to cap off my career and to win it there over any other course made it more special for me."

Jimmy Meyers on which is more special, individual or team achievements.
"That’s a good question but I would probably say team titles. I know it’s great to win an individual title, but to be able to win as a team three times in a row is just crazy. I know it’s only happened one time at my school before (2012) before these three times and you’re able to celebrate with everybody on the team, the coaches and it was really special to win it three times in a row, so I would say the team is more important."
