A visit with WPIAL swimming champion Jonah Cagley

Background Info: Jonah Cagley has an opportunity to join a very elite group. Since 1980 only two divers, Chris Rebholz of Seneca Valley and Connor Kuremsky from North Allegheny, have ever won three WPIAL Class 3A titles. Cagley can become the third this year. Over the last two years the Fox Chapel senior and Duke University recruit has been the gold standard. He won the title in 2017 with 525.20 points and improved to 536.85 last year. He also finished third in the state each of the last two seasons.

Jonah Cagley on his WPIAL experience.
"Over the past couple of years, I think that I’ve become more confident and I’ve always had good experiences at WPIALs. This year I’m just going with the positive attitude that it’s going to be my best year so far."

Jonah Cagley on standing atop the podium.
"It’s honestly such a great feeling because you can see all the hard work that you put into the season and all the sacrifices you made all season, it pays off when you’re on top of the podium."

Jonah Cagley on his legacy.
"I really don’t know. I just want to be remembered as a good diver. I taught a couple of the divers on my team like (sophomore) David Manellis some things about diving, so hopefully it will be a positive thing, but I don’t know."

Jonah Cagley on potentially coaching diving.
"Honestly, at this point in my life I would have to say no, but you never know what can happen. I do coach now at Pitt on Sundays, I’m a developmental coach, which is a lot of fun. But I don’t think of that as a long-term career path."
