A visit with former WPIAL swimming champion Kayla Churman

Background Info: Kayla Churman is one of aa long list of North Allegheny swimmers to bring home multiple WPIAL Class 3A individual titles. In 2003-15, Churman won the 100-yard butterfly three consecutive years, to date one of just six to do it solely in the WPIAL’s highest classification. In addition, her 54.86-second winning time in 2014 makes her only the second ever to break 55 seconds in the finals, joining 1984 Penn Hills graduate Melanie Buddemeyer who did it three times.

Kayla Churman on her WPIAL experience.
"It was really nice. The people, you’ve been racing a lot of them since you were younger and in outside swim clubs. It was a fun, competitive atmosphere and I still think that WPIALs was one of the funnest meets because it brought the teams close together and everyone was cheering for you. With states, it was fun, but the whole teams doesn’t get to go, so there’s not as big a group cheering for you."

Kayla Churman on being a part of the North Allegheny community.
"It was fantastic. The swimming program that I went through was phenomenal and the group of girls graduated with was the best group of girls and I think out (200) medley relay record (1:42.56 in 2015) is going to be there for a while. There’s not been as strong of a group of girls as the one I graduated with."

Kayla Churman on the North Allegheny mystique that’s won 11 straight team titles.
"It’s like you’re motivated to be great, There’s just so many people that you have to look up to and you know that you’re going to well there because it’s been one of the strongest programs in the WPIAL for what seems like forever and and you’re going to accomplish a lot and get a lot out of it."
